Final Fantasy XI synopsis
The lands of Vana'diel open to the world as Final Fantasy moves online. Several nations comprising several unique races do battle with one another, gaining and losing possession of land as they go, and you and your friends will take part in this in any way you see fit. The Rise of the Zilart expansion adds summoning and several new character classes to the mix, and it's not worth ignoring that Final Fantasy XI will retain its cohesive storytelling ability even in MMORPG form.playing sincePlayers

As you might already know, members from the current Final Fantasy XI team are working on a next generation MMO, but it still hasn't been decided whether that's going to be a game in the FF series, a continuation, or a totally new game. We are working on it, but it hasn't been decided that far yet.

Upcoming Final Fantasy XI expansion Wings of the Goddess will feature a new character class: the scholar. As seen above, the scholar will sport a fetching hat, unnecessarily high socks, and eyeglasses which pierce into academic infinity. Square Enix relates that, "extensive knowledge of ancient martial theory granted [him] the ability to wield dual schools of magic, between which [he] would alternate depending on the situation at hand." Sounds like a Red Mage to me.

Monday saw the announcement of the newest Final Fantasy concert tour, "Distant Worlds: music from FINAL FANTASY." The tour is in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the release of the original Final Fantasy title. Full Article
- A young FFCC clambers to 250k; old man FFXI still pushing 500k
The newest Japanese Software Chart reveals that the late August release of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates has reached 256,000 sales, putting it at number one. Similarly, Final Fantasy XI has finally reached 500,000 players worldwide. Unfortunately for FFXI, the five year crawl to 500,000 has been significantly dwarfed by FFCC's stampede up the charts. Hopefully, the long-term investment in FFXI has warranted enough profits to compete with resource reinvestment in various smaller projects.

A little over a month ago, GameTrailers.com began its "Final Fantasy Retrospective", a survey of the Final Fantasy series, beginning with its humble origins some twenty years ago. Aside from being extremely well put-together and informative, it features references to some of our favorite embarrassing Square titles, from Alpha to 3-D Worldrunner. Now in its sixth installment featuring Final Fantasy VIII and Final Fantasy XI, it is a comprehensive look at one of Square Enix's flagship series and a definite must-watch for any fan or historian. - E3 2007 - Square Enix to bring online store stateside
In addition to its E3 lineup announcement, Square Enix has revealed its scheme to open a North American online store. Square Enix, as a self-described "premiere [maker] of high end-collectibles" plans to stock a multitude of "popular and hard-to-find items" including Master Arms, Play Arts, and Mechanical Arts spanning various series, from Final Fantasy to Kingdom Hearts. Clearly, Square Enix has seen that someone, somewhere is making money selling its products. The immediate consequence will likely find many third-party vendors competing for profits with Square Enix itself. The Online Store
